Thoughts on Tokyo Godfathers

There was a lot for my mind to unpack when I watched that film but what I did notice right from the very start was some potential symbolism... with the 3 homeless bums, one a middle-aged divorced husband (Gin), another a transgender woman (Hana), and a runaway teenage girl (Miyuki) being in my mind, I connected it to a representation of the Three Kings as represented in a standard Nativity.... or perhaps Mary, Joseph and the donkey. I dunno I had to watch the school nativity 6 times, once a year.

But I will continue further and say I am very receptive of the other themes within the movie, particularly in regards to confronting your past. All the three main characters before becoming homeless have a past they ran away from due to various reasons, and cowardly refused to face them... until the dumpster baby that they are taking care of basically forces them to confront their past, through realising their mistakes through others and having to meet the people they abandoned, as they all go over Tokyo to find the baby's original parents. Generally this film has a series of coincidences. Given it is also a film about homeless people taking care of a baby, I also thought its take on found family was quite interesting. I think there are also themes about grief|| especially maternal grief|| at the tail end, if you've seen it you'll know what I mean. Really I think this film being more realsitic and not that psychological like Perfect Blue or surreal like Paprika does help this.

There is a lot of f-slurs dropped in the film, particularly towards Hana but I feel she is protrayed well for the time and you can clearly tell she has a maternal instinct. I also do like the humanisation of the minor Latin American illegal immigrants, it was very interesting seeing that.

Just really like the film overall. God I wish Satoshi Kon was still alive.

If I had to rank the films I've seen from him it would be:

Perfect Blue>Tokyo Godfathers>Paprika

Though I do strongly like all of them.
